We’ve finished, recording at least, our upcoming single Powder, with a glorious bonus track Lens Flare sellotaped on the back for your aural consumption. Recording took place over two long days at Safehouse Studio in Oxford working with Kit Monteith of Trophy Wife, and producer Tim Roberts. This promises to be our best release to date, not only because the songs are – we believe – more mature than previous releases, but because Kit has completely ripped them apart, thrown bits in the Biffa outside, and glued bits back in the wrong place; bringing a more catchy and commercially viable sound. Allowing us free reign of the studio and all it has to offer has meant that what started as your standard VNH set up of drums, bass, guitar, synth and vocals has now grown to include Rhodes piano, Memotron keys, string sections, bells, electronic drums and clapping and all four members huddled round a microphone shouting random words in and out of time and tune… Particular highlights were ten minutes of Darryl strumming two chords while Mark relentlessly twiddled the volume knob until his wrist gave out; Sam creating ambient sounds by punching a guitar and hitting it with a headphone cable; and Alexis rising to the challenge of his beat being rewritten five minutes before the record button was hit.
Now it’s a waiting game as Kit and Tim huddle round the G5 mixing and mastering, it could be weeks as although there’s only four of us we managed to record around fifty stems for each track. We’re as excited as you guys to see how they turn out because there’s quite a few options on how we could make the finished tracks sound. Do you want dark and ambient? Or upbeat and bouncy? It could go either way!
We will obviously be making a huge song and dance when the tracks are finished so you will definitely know they’re coming. And with Kit contributing his brilliant bell rustling and shaker shaking skills to the tracks, they will of course be released as ‘VNH feat. Trophy Wife’ (Not yet confirmed, no copyright intended)
